Chapter 4: EXIT STRATEGIES FOR BEGINNERS

The sun came up, but they couldn’t see it, as the thick clouds of black smoke now blocked it out. The entire world was bathed in a depressing gray. As she ignited the engines again, Joshua sat next to her, studying the map Bruce had left them in his backpack.

“When we hit the road, we need to go back one block and then left. At the end of the street there should be the bike shop,” Joshua explained.

“Just tell me when to pull left,” Cassy said, as they made their way back to the town. Their entire plan for survival was based on Joshua being right about them being ‘night active’. If he was wrong, they would run into thousands of them, and would quickly be overwhelmed, car or not.

When they finally broke free of the forest and turned into the street though, none of the creatures were anywhere. They passed empty streets, some of them filled with bodies and occasionally a car, usually with doors opened. Either the drivers had gotten out and never got back— or the creatures had dragged them from their seats.

“Now left,” Joshua said and yawned. They hadn’t got a lot of sleep; but they had survived the night. Something Cassy hadn’t believed they could, when she’d seen Roland’s face in that kitchen.

She stopped the car and Joshua looked up. In front of them, a large truck had fallen to its side and blocked the road. There was no way around it.

“We need to walk the rest.”

Joshua agreed with a nod. “About five minutes.”

Grabbing her gun, Cassy opened the door and got out. She dragged her backpack from the backseat and pulled it on her shoulders. Every bone in her body was aching. Exhaustion, both physically and mentally, was the dominant feeling for her right now. She wasn’t used to such physically and psychologically stressful situations, yet she knew they would face many more before this was over.

Holding his gun in one hand, her little brother stepped out of the car. He was tired, she could see that. But he had none of the mental tension she felt. Looking around, he pulled his own backpack on his shoulders and then pointed with the gun in the direction beyond the truck. Cassy nodded and they began their journey by climbing over the obstacle in front of them, right where the truck was attached to its fan. Waiting for Joshua to make it, Cassy took a sip from their only water bottle and saw that the fires had come a lot closer. They wouldn’t be able to stay here another night. The street was empty, except for one single police car parked there. She looked inside as she passed it. Someone had already taken everything of value. The radio, the weapons— it was all gone. No sign of the policeman who had driven it there. Cassy decided she probably didn’t want to know his fate.
