Chapter Sixteen

Luke

“Jerry?” I barked. “How many are there?”

Angela blanched when I snapped at her, and I immediately wanted to kick myself. “I’m sorry.”

She nodded then said, “Jerry didn’t live with us. I don’t think he likes people. I don’t know how he survived but him and Tom helped each other out sometimes. Steve didn’t like him.”

My gut fell, I had four people I had to get to safety, no transportation, and we were being chased by three angry men. So not good.

“I’m serious,” Brie said as she looked at my back shoulder. “Let me check it out. We’ve got time if Tom is going back to get help.”

Sighing, I let my shoulders slump. She was probably right. “Okay,” I said as I gingerly wiggled out of my jacket then pulled the T-shirt up over my head, the cloth sticking on the dried blood. I then undid the leather string around my neck that held the scabbard and knife that hung between my shoulder blades.

I caught Brie checking me out. She blushed and pushed me around so she could look at the wound and winced. Turning to Angela, she said, “See if there is any bottled water in the kitchen, bring a bowl and any rags.” Brie then started probing at my back, making me flinch.

“It’s still in there,” she said, and I knew she was shaking her head. “Sit here,” she commanded as she pulled out a wooden chair and pushed me down onto it.

A wave of fatigue washed over me as I let myself rest. A thousand thoughts and regrets flashed through my brain as Brie worked on my back. Should I have killed Shorty? Or Tom. I had the opportunity, but I hadn’t taken it. Something told me I was going to regret that decision somewhere along the way.

It felt like someone was ripping me up from the inside.

Brie hissed under her breath as she probed and prodded then said, “There,” as she showed me a double ought buckshot. She then washed the blood off my back, and I closed my eyes soaking up her tender caress. God, a guy could get to enjoy this. A beautiful woman rubbing his back.

Angela had found one of those metal first aid kits. She held it open as Brie spread some ointment then removed a big square bandage and gently laid it over the wound.

“I think you’ll be okay,” she said with a concerned frown.

“Come on,” I said as I wiggled back into my jacket, my shirt was too soaked with blood. “We can’t stay here, Maybe they didn’t go back, and they are still after us. Slow, but steady.”

The others looked at me with a worry that ate at my soul. I hated seeing little kids frightened like this. The universe wasn’t right that they should experience such things. But they nodded and within minutes we were on the road that led around the lake.

“How far?” Paul asked.

“Don’t know,” I answered. “But we’ll stop at the next town. We’ll get us guys some clothes and find something to eat.
