Chapter Twenty

Nick

We spent the next two days getting the bus ready. Tony went over the machinery while the rest of the boys and myself removed all the seats except the front three rows. The rest would be mattresses and totes.

Brie spent two days organizing her food stores. “I want to know where things are,” she said as she repacked for the third time.

The girls did the last load of laundry by hand and helped Brie, then packed their backpacks.

Jenny sulked. I don’t think she was happy at the idea of leaving. She had always loved this place. For me, it was just a jumping-off spot. I was excited to be going. Hopefully to a newer, brighter future. Sure I knew things could go bad. Hell, a thousand things could go wrong. Criminals on the road taking everything. The bus breaking down a hundred miles from the next town. But most of all. Sickness. What if THIS still existed. I might be leading these kids to their deaths.

And to top it off Crystal and Jenny didn’t seem to be getting along. It was like being around two cats who couldn’t stand each other. I don’t know why, Crystal was sweet. Always willing to help me. And Jenny. Well, we all knew there wasn’t a better person in this world.

I was thinking about talking to her about it. Asking her what her problem was with Crystal. It was obvious the girl had gone through a bad time. But I decided against it. I was too busy to go searching for drama.

After we were finished with the bus, I broke out the shotgun and loaded it, and found the perfect spot between the driver's seat and the window. I would keep the .45 in my belt and the .38 under the seat where I could grab it if necessary.

I gathered everyone together and read them the riot act about what I would do to them if I caught them touching any of the three guns. “They are loaded and ready. Hopefully, we won’t need them, but I have to trust you people. I think you guys are old enough and smart enough. Any questions.”

Katy stared up at me with big eyes. I knew she wanted to question me about the need for guns, but I also knew she remembered the visit from those two men. She swallowed her doubt and nodded her head accepting my rules.

That last night, Brie had kept some food back so we could have a last party before we left in the morning. All the things we had missed. For Emma, it was peanut butter and jelly on biscuits. Tony wanted Nachos with velveta cheese. For those who couldn’t make up their mind, Brie laid out a smorgasbord of protein, deviled ham, sardines, Nutella, Slim Jims, - Those things will last forever-, Even the pickled pig's feet were enjoyed by more than one.

It was as if our bodies were screaming for things we couldn’t get from canned green beans and flour tortillas.
