Chapter 3

He marked the days that passed him by, took note of the seasons and the skies and the sun and stars and the like. He kept going through in his mind all the people that's walked through the streets, the sidewalks, all the mindless screeching and the like. Day after day, Luke started longing for someone, anyone. Even a death threat would be nice. The fact that the world might’ve just ended, and he was the only one here, was even more of a cause for concern.

So he went outside one evening, when the full moon was out. He took that trashed, beat up car, all of his money, some clothes and food and water and all that junk. He grabbed the keys to his apartment, locked the door, and just drove. Why evening? He was a romantic. He still remembers his latest one night stand, so of course he went during that time. And when he did, he drove.

Even after the car broke down at the side of the road, even when he made it so far he had to pack everything in a small little backpack with some water, even when his clothes got ruined, and dreams of his apartment kept plaguing him, he went on searching, trying to find anyone in a now increasingly empty world.

He'd forgotten how much time had passed since he last spoke to someone. He'd forgotten how long had passed when the buildings weren’t infested with nature, when wild animals didn't wander the streets, when humanity had once lived at the pinnacle of civilization. He'd forgotten how long, but he could still feel the nostalgia of it.

He closed his eyes, one night. He was resting inside an empty parking garage, staring out at the skies, the sunset, at everything around him. He gripped his bottle, the precious drops of water still swirling on the inside, and simply closed his eyes. Memories of what'd happened that night, just before everyone vanished, came back to him. Of that sweet, warm caress just before everyone disappeared. Of the man he didn't even know, and took as just a really good one night stand. Of all the things that came to mind, that was one of them.

And he couldn't help but laugh at how stupid that was. How could he not? Why not family or friends, or even the pathetic, almost hellish time he called a childhood? Why not about all he wanted to do? Why not just make plans? Well, that was just it. Other than that man, nothing came to mind.

He shivered at the breeze. Even so, he felt hot, anxious even. He remembered the man’s touch, when he slipped his fingers underneath his clothes, and how comforting it was, for the man to warm him up despite the upcoming storm. For Luke to simply relish in someone else's touch, though the world he trapped himself in was cold to the touch. It was, at the moment, the first time he felt human. In a really, really long while.
