Ronald Glennon finished rinsing off the fire truck outside the one and only fire station in the town of The Edge. They were having a parade today and as usual they had to have their vehicles spotless. He didn’t mind. Most of the time he fought with machines as he tried to fix them so people could continue farming.

Handling a hose was easy and something not even he could fuck up. He cracked a smile as he thought about the fun that was going to be had today. Small towns may not be everyone’s thing, but he loved his. Loved how he knew the people here, how he didn’t have to wonder who someone was and what they were doing in his store. He knew the diner’s specials and could tell the day of the week by what Mrs. Lima served. Or perhaps that was the other way around. He could tell what was being served by the day of the week it was. Either way, this slower life was what he wanted.

He waved at Mr. Johns as he drove by in his older model Crown Vic. About three minutes later the next vehicle drove by. This one he didn’t recognize. A brown Durango. He couldn't make out who the driver was, but they weren’t driving slow like most tourists who came through town. He finished cleaning up and hopped in his truck to head home and eat before the parade began at two.

As he drove he passed the gas station and noticed that same vehicle. The woman filling up the tank had long black hair and a hat pulled down over her face, and she had a killer figure. He whistled under his breath as he went by. Hot.

Back at the station before the parade, he drew on his turnout pants. Leaving the suspenders hanging down, he smiled at Lucas, another of the firefighters in town.

“Where’d you go?”

“Home for something to eat. I’ve been here all damn morning. Why? Something happen?”

“Nope, just curious, you know. Did you bring food to share?”

“I cook here occasionally but no, I didn’t bring you anything, Lucas. I swear, man, you eat all the time. How is it you don’t weigh over five hundred pounds?”

His friend smoothed his hands down his sides. “I got me the good genes.”

Ronald snorted and brushed by him. “That means your sister didn’t? I’m afraid you’ll be needing to see the doctor if she hears about that.”

“So don’t tell her.”

“Don’t worry, she’s likely to kill the messenger so I won’t be mentioning your delusions to her.”

They jumped up on the truck as it pulled out of the station. He had a wonderful time, and enjoyed seeing the children get to explore the truck and play with the equipment. They passed out candy and had fun.

Afterward he went to Dreamer’s Feed & Equipment to get to work on a combine part he had to repair. As it neared closing, he’d begun cleaning up when the bell announcing a customer jingled.
