It’s All Right in the End

While the Eden Institute did hold informal get-togethers for members and their Littles, formal events were rare. But this night marked a very special, though sad, event for the exclusive organization.

Dr. Patton had been a fixture at Eden nearly since its inception. He’d met Julian Blackstone as other men had, through underground channels at exclusive secret sex parties. But Dr. Patton was not a man of means, and could not afford Eden’s services even in the early days. But what he could offer in exchange was his presence on the staff as Eden’s physician specializing in Littles. Through Julian, Dr. Patton had met Marny, the Little who would eventually become his wife. They’d been together for years, and although Marny had “grown up” as they’d aged, she still retained a charming girlishness that everyone found endearing.

Everyone loved the Pattons, but now it was time for Dr. Patton to retire. He and Marny wanted to travel, and he was anxious to start this new phase of his life. But he’d waited until he’d found the right replacement. Nurse Grant Fullwood was now Dr. Fullwood, and would be taking over at Eden, and – if all went well – would soon have a Little of his own.

“I don’t understand why we have to dress up,” Elise said. She made a face at Mandy, who was spinning around in her white dress covered in tiny silver flowers. The white crinoline billowed underneath the shimmering skirt.

“You should be happy,” Mandy said. “You look like a princess. We both do!”

Elise’s dress was the same style as Mandy’s only in a green that matched her eyes. Unlike Mandy, she did not care for the poofy skirts that made it impossible to see her feet.

“I hope all the Littles in fancy dresses aren’t going to spin like you all night.” Elise flopped down on the floor in a cloud of satin and tulle. “I think it’s dumb that we have to go. We all said goodbye to Dr. Patton at the ice cream party.”

“Yeah, but that party was for the Littles; this is for everybody,” Mandy said. “And we get to meet some of the Littles who used to live at Eden until they moved in with their Papas.”

Elise grew quiet. “Do you think that will happen with us? Do you think our Papas will eventually take us home?”

“It’s not allowed for the first two years,” Mandy said. “After a year there can be overnights, but Papa says the Institute has to be careful. The transitions are slow because they have to work. If the couples are happy and well-adjusted, there’s less chance that someone will tell what they know.”

Elise considered this. Sometimes it was easy to forget just how shadowy Eden actually was. And she realized she didn’t even know where Max Brookshire lived. He came to the institute several days a week to spend time with her, and tried as often as he could to spend weekends there. She wondered if being together would make it different.
