About Slip

Slip is a solution of clay particles suspended in water. Slip will “fatten” (become stickier) over time as the water infiltrates the microscopic clay structure. For ease and speed of tamping, we prefer to mix the clay and straw in advance and let the mixture sit—ideally overnight— prior to loading the forms.

The goal in mixing the clay and straw is to thoroughly coat each blade of straw with clay slip. The “stickiness” of the slip is a product of the percentage of clay in the clay soils used to make the slip. The higher the clay content, the stickier the slip, and the less slip required to create a wall. The densities used in successful light straw clay walls have ranged from as dense as 50 pcf to as light as 15 pcf. (Refer to “Wall Density Variations” in Chapter 12.)
