This year also proved crucial to the future of the East India Company and the British Empire for another reason, the Tea Act. The Tea Act altered the duties on Indian tea to make their prices competitive with smuggled Dutch tea, for the purposes of selling to American colonists in order to increase East India Company profits in their time of fiscal crisis. Despite the fact that the Tea Act did not significantly alter the price of tea in the colonies, Americans resented the duties paid on the tea and used the Act as a way of agitating for political change. This famously culminated in the Boston Tea Party and, eventually, the American Revolution. The East India Company thus played an important part in the formation of the United States and the loss of the American colonies (Sankey, “Tea Act”).
