It was early morning when Karl approached the large house just outside the city center. He accompanied a squad of five Freikorps men, specifically selected for this mission, as their target was of high importance. It was also why Karl had decided to come along with them—he wanted to see firsthand how one of the most prominent members of the city would respond.

They reached the front door in silence. Communicating with hand signals, the most forward-placed man indicated for the rest to stand back. He then pounded the front door with surprising force, the sound appearing even louder in the silent morning.

Nothing happened for the first ten seconds, and the man rocked the front door again, now adding a vocal command for the people in the house to come outside.

After thirty seconds the lock rattled, and a tall man opened the door. Fully dressed, he glared at the men, but he did not appear surprised. Karl frowned—the man knew they were coming.

“Herr Prokisch, you are to come with us. I suggest you do so willingly, or we’re authorized to use force.” The leader of the group spoke politely, but there was no doubting the validity of his threat. “You are relieved of your function.”

Karl watched Andreas Prokisch, the mayor of the city, calmly observe the faces of the men on his doorstep. It was clear he recognized them, and he paused for a moment when he met Karl’s eyes. He looked taken aback, his eyes showing surprise at the stranger, then he appeared to realize who Karl must be, or what he was part of. Prokisch then nodded and stepped forward with his head held high.

“Where will you take me?”

“You’ll be detained in one of the hotels in the city.” The man guided the mayor away from the house. “Until it’s decided what’s to be done with you.”

Karl was impressed by the mayor’s calm acceptance of his fate. They escorted the man toward a waiting car. One of the Freikorps men was opening the door when a rock crashed against the windscreen of the car. Another sailed by and narrowly missed one of the men’s heads. Karl and the other men turned toward the source and saw six men in their early twenties approaching.

“Where are you taking the mayor? Come here, you Nazi scum!” The men were only twenty meters down the road. Nothing happened for a moment while the Freikorps sized them up. Then, to Karl’s utter surprise, the young men charged and ran down the road screaming obscenities.

They crossed the distance at alarming speed, nearly surprising the experienced Freikorps men. Then their training kicked in as they bundled the mayor into the car before they took up defensive positions next to it. The Germans were outnumbered, but Karl was confident their training would see them through.

The groups clashed seconds later, and Karl found himself in the back. Balling his fists, he suddenly realized he was carrying his sidearm. A young man appeared in front of him, a scowl on his face.
