Chapter Fourteen

She ended up back in Jackson Ward just past 7:00 without knowing why that was the area of Richmond she’d picked. Driving past Gnarly’s Pub on East Clay Street brought that night two months ago racing through her mind again. Ember watching her drow form slip through without any control. Ember talking about the myth of halflings and saying that magicals like them had to stick together. Take care of each other. Ember racing off to the skatepark a few blocks north without a word because Cheyenne was busy freaking out in the alley.

Feels like forever ago. I was so full of myself.

Cheyenne pulled her Panamera into the parking lot at the end of the row of shops and restaurants, locked the doors, and crossed the street to head for the park.

The streetlamps cast yellow pools of muted light on the asphalt as she crossed Brook Road, then lit up the browning grass along the edge of the park, which would most likely be covered with frost in the morning. Somewhere on the east side of the park, car doors opened and shut quickly and voices rose in greeting.

Regular people getting out of their regular cars to go about their regular lives. That’s how I’d want it to be if some magical I didn’t even know existed was planning to rip holes through two worlds and do what? Guess I’m about to find out.

She reached the end of the grass and the border of the skatepark. The pavilion in front was empty, of course. The chain-link fence around the concrete playground for kids on wheels looked the same as the last time she’d been here, after the fence and the blasted chunks of cement had been repaired.

Cheyenne slipped through the gate, the fence rattling when she opened it, and stepped across the concrete pavement along the dipping edge of the halfpipe. The dark stain on the ground could have been what was left of Ember’s blood, impossible to wash out. It could have been an oil stain or the mostly dried splash of someone’s spilled water bottle too.

Kind of a macabre place to return to for a little privacy. I guess that’s the way I like it.

With a final glance at that dark stain, she turned to face the fence and the empty park on the other side, then sat on the cement and crossed her legs.

L’zar and his fucking meditations. If this doesn’t work, I’m out of ideas.

The drow closed her eyes and exhaled a long, slow breath. Her hands rested palms-up on her thighs. A thin breeze rippled across the skatepark, rattling the fence again and brushing her High-Voltage Raven Black hair away from her face and back over her shoulders. It was a lot colder now than the night Ember had tried to break up a magical fight and was shot in the spine for her trouble. Cheyenne didn’t feel the cold.

She focused on L’zar.

Wherever you are, I’m gonna find you. Bet you never thought getting into my head would come back to bite you in the ass like this.
