Out of unfounded grief, a longed-for reunion shall come.

Ullin stared at the writing as a heavy tear dropped from his eye onto his hand. But he was smiling. In fact, he was filled with a strange and inexplicable joy.

Within the hour, Ullin had donned Robby's vest beneath his blouse, and he had gathered all that he thought he could carry into a single backpack, including many pounds of coal. He carefully dressed for the cold, and struck out with several coils of rope over his shoulder. When he got to the gate, he gazed for a long time at the castle floating very far out over the chasm. No causeway connected it to land and, with no clouds or mists swirling, he saw that the castle rested on nothing whatsoever, no peak, no mountain jutting up from the depths of the chasm, nothing at all.

Working up his nerve, he carefully stepped closer to the precipitous drop, and looked down. After a moment, he edged closer.

"Oh, good grief, Robby!"

It was a sheer drop, and vertigo made him step back quickly, shaking his head.

"Robby, Robby, Robby!"

In spite of the cold, a nervous sweat broke out on his brow as he forced himself to the precipice once more to take another look, gazing straight down. He saw it, about a hundred feet below, a ledge or outcrop of some kind. Going back to the gate, he got out the ropes, tied an end securely around one of the uprights, and went back to the edge, getting down on his belly for a safer look, holding onto the rope for extra security. Yes, definitely a ledge. And it seemed to go northward as far as he could safely discern. Tossing the rope over, he watched it unravel. Good, it went beyond the ledge, so there was plenty. Pulling it up, he untied it, then passed it around the upright again, and tied together the two bitter ends. He looped it around his backpack and lowered it, lying on his belly to pay out the line. When the pack landed on the ledge, there were still several yards of rope left. Before he gave himself time to back out, he gripped the double line with both hands and crawled backwards over the side, descending as quickly as he could, never looking down. Before he realized it, his feet were on the ledge.

Still gripping the rope tightly, he sat down with his back against the cliff, panting. The mysterious castle that was Griferis was now somewhat above him, but as he looked at it, while his heart resumed a less excited beat, he could still not see anything supporting the place. As for the ledge on which he sat, it seemed sturdy and wide enough; the edge was another two yards beyond his sprawled out legs.

"How did Robby discover this?" he mused, slowly getting up. He untied the knot and pulled one of the ropes so that the other went up. Soon the rope was cascading downward in loops and curls and Ullin ducked his head to let it drape all over him.
