Itâs no surprise when his teeth sink into the bite on my neck. Weâre in his war room and heâs sat me on the giant table that is also a map. I lose myself in the euphoria it is to be bitten. Tears squeeze from my eyes. No matter what foolish things we do, weâll always have the bite to bring us back.
Thereâs a squelch when he pulls his dragon teeth from my neck. He uses his tongue to take the blood with him.
âMine,â he says.
âYours,â I agree.
âWhat the fuck is wrong with him?â
He means Brock.
âIt worked, Alpha. You produced more fire than Iâve ever seen.â To expand like that takes a lot of energy from a dragonâs heart.
âIt was easy once I thought he was going to hurt you. He wouldnât have hurt you; or would he?â
âProbably a little.â
âWhy are you grinning ear-to-ear? That shouldnât make you happy,â he says, combing my wild hair back with his fingers.
âI love being protected by you, Alpha. Obviously, I can protect myself when I need to, but I like when you do it,â I admit.
A knock at the door comes too soon. They are always too soon. Itâs Ikara. Tristanâs barely got the âcome inâ out of his mouth and sheâs rushing in.
âOh, sorry. Am I interrupting something?â
We pull away abruptly, only just noticing how close we are, as if weâre doing something wrong even though the closeness of an alpha and his omega is supposed to be as natural as breathing.
âNo. Nothing,â Tristan says. âCome in, Ikara.â
âSorry, itâs just ⦠do you two know that your pants have been singed off?â
Right, we must look a sight. I hop off the table so that I can face my sister. She doesnât look like someone whoâs been told no by Father.
Tristan shakes his head. âSomeone decided to play with fire. What did your father say?â
âOh, Gods. He said no, of course.â She smiles. âSo, weâll have to go just the three of us.â
âWhat? Ikara, youâve lost your mind,â I tell her.
Tristanâs hand finds its way to my jacket and fiddles with the scales there. Heâs still leaning toward the more animalistic manifestation of his dragon side. âMy omega has a point. You may have lost your mind. If your father doesnât want the dragonâproviding there actually is oneâthen he has spoken. I hate to be the one to remind you of this, but we couldnât fight one beast, your mother did that for us. How do we fight a horde?â
âI donât know yet, but I know youâll figure it out.â
The Warlord growls. Not at her; at me. Itâs a low guttural rumble in his chest. Iâm not doing anything. Reaching out to him, through our bond, I sense that feeling of missing I felt before. Like Iâm far away even though Iâm right here.
I take a step backward and press myself against him. Perhaps heâs realized we arenât fully dressed. His hand finds mine and he squeezes. He calms down.
âHow would we even get there, Ikara?â
âI can get us there,â is all she says not giving anything away.
