Chapter 15

Joseph Felton watched Tomas bring the pack in from the hunt. He sat with Charlie Black, and Willy Barnes while each wolf trotted through the gate and headed to their respective campsites.

Joseph could tell the mood of the pack was upbeat. Tails were in the air and a spring in their steps. There was also a knot of wolves gathered around Clifford, including Heather. Joseph wondered what they were talking about.

It was strange, but the red wolf was gaining a following on the strength of his personality alone. He showed no signs of trying to exert his dominance, and he might not even be aware what he was doing, but Joseph could see he was allowing some of the pack members to follow Tomas. Tomas showed no signs of concern or threat to his authority. Strangely, Joseph didn’t feel threatened either. But, he was concerned.

It was a dynamic Joseph had never seen among a pack of wolves.

Willy stood. “Kendall looks pretty pumped. I’m going to go see what’s up.” It was a statement of intent, but he waited for the alpha’s approval before he left the table.

Joseph nodded. “Sure, go ahead. I bet you anything he had something to do with the kill, the way he’s acting. If so, I’m sorry you weren’t there to see it.” He was sincere in his regret. Willy’s relationship with his son had become more and more strained as Kendall’s dominant wolf had begun to assert itself. He knew the two had hunted by themselves, but to share the experience of the first hunt with the pack would have helped to strengthen a weakening father-son bond.

“No problem, boss,” Willy said as he turned and walked towards his campsite.

Joseph turned to Charlie Black and waved a hand in Clifford’s direction. “You ever see anything like that?”

“Never,” John replied. “Even those in front of him are trying to follow him. Tomas is still the leader, but they want to follow Clifford.”

As he said the words, Clifford looked in their direction and lowered his head in respect and acknowledgment before trotting over to the bushes where he’d left his neatly folded pile of clothes.

“At least he’s polite about it.”

“Charlie Black, I have this vision of him politely walking off with my pack at his heels.”

“Naw, I don’t think you have to worry about that. I mean, the alpha bond is still there. I can feel it. That red wolf ain’t exerting any kind of dominance in opposition to you. You don’t feel any, do you?”

“No.”

“Right. And, even though he’s somehow linked in to the pack bond, he’s operating completely outside the dominance chain. Have you tried to give him a command?”

“No, but I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t work. You’re right, he’s outside. That’s a good way to describe it. Like, something of his wolfness is missing.”

“Or something is added. Joe, I’m almost positive. That there’s a male omega.”

Clifford emerged from the bushes in human form again, fully clothed. He was hungry, and tired. What was it now, Tuesday morning? Since Saturday, he couldn’t have slept more than a total of seven hours.
