MARGARET FULLER

Margaret Fuller (1810–1850) was the author of the renowned Woman in the Nineteenth Century (1845), a book-length essay. She was a poet, Transcendentalist, women’s rights activist, editor and journalist. She, her husband and her child died when the ship on which they were returning to America sank off Fire Island, New York. The first essay, similar in topic and manner to the writing in Woman in the Nineteenth Century, was found among her papers after her death by her brother, Arthur Buckminster Fuller, and included in “Miscellanies” in an 1855 edition of her work.
