“We missed him at the airport.”

“Shit,” Hudson pounded the desk.

“Our men got there as soon as they could, but our man must have been first off the plane, with no check-in baggage.”

“Well, find him. Check every hotel. Check the car rentals.”

“We’ll do what we can, sir, but it is Christmas Eve.”

“I didn’t ask you to do what you can, I said do it,” Hudson barked at him. Walkens shook his head and left the room.

KabinuIsland, South Pacific

“T minus ten minutes to primary launch.”

Matt Lerner looked up from his desk. The control room was buzzing as people continued the myriads of intricate checks to be carried out before the launch. Everyone was wearing the same light blue, aloha T-shirts, always the same for launch day. There had been a few heart-stopping moments when the launch sequence had been stopped. A leaking valve had been repaired, and a faulty battery had to be replaced. But now at last everything was looking good.

In less than ten minutes time, a modified Minuteman II missile would lift off from Stromberg Air Force base in California. Twenty minutes later, an Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicle, known as an EKV, propelled by a modified version of the Minuteman, would lift off from KabinuIsland on an interception course, receiving tracking information from the new Misty II stealth satellite that Parker Industries had built and launched a month earlier, completed with the new X-Band tracking radar. If everything went well, some nine minutes later the EKV would destroy the intruder. Matt Lerner didn’t like to think of the consequences if it didn’t.
