• Once you calculate your DA, from that point on keep your monthly bills in a “special place” for the next three months. Then use the same principle I have explained to you when recalculating. Enter the month with the highest bill for each category to determine the most up-to-date DA to use. Imagine how excited you will be when you notice that after a quarterly checkup, your DA may have increased!

DAILY USE

What do I do if I have money left over at the end of the day?

• Well, for starters, that’s awesome! If your DA is 38 and you have $8 left when the day is over, that means you’ve been really smart and disciplined with your spending. It should feel good, knowing that you are sticking to your budget and even making progress. Now there are two options you have:

1. You get to treat yourself (see how fun this can be?). Remember the Fun Bucket? You can add the extra $8 to your secret stash and use it to splurge on anything you choose

2. . . . you can add the extra $8 to your DA for the next day. This is a perfect idea for those times when you want to buy items that are more costly than your DA permits. I will explain this a bit further as you keep reading.

What do I do if I go “over” my limit?

• First of all, I encourage you not to do that. Spending more than your DA defeats the whole purpose of sticking to a budget and, just like sticking to a diet, this is a big no-no. It’s like eating a big piece of cheesecake when you are trying to lose weight. The Dollar Code is a concept of gaining control of your finances. Nevertheless, we are all human. No one is perfect. Therefore, if you do go over on your DA, you must take it off the next day’s amount—or even two or three days if the overage is really bad. No excuses, ifs, ands, or buts! I’m serious!

How do I buy items that are more than my DA?

• Ah, this is a very good question. This concept is all about planning and is another reason why the Dollar Code is so important as it relates to budgeting. If you want to buy an extra pair of shoes, a new golf club, a new outfit, or just need money for any reason that may come up, it may cost more than your DA allows you to spend. Now, you will have three choices:

1. As I’ve explained above, the first way to buy something that is more than your DA is to spend less on other days until you have accumulated the amount you need. For example, if your DA is 30 and you are only allowed to spend $30 every day without busting your budget, but the new golf club is $100, you will need to spend less than $30 each day until you reach the extra funds that are needed to buy the club.
