The Doctor Will See You Now

Chapter 23

“Then we…we just left him.”

Paula leaned back in her chair and exhaled a long-drawn-out breath. She could see the pain in Katie’s eyes. Hear the distress in her voice. Paula had never been a fan of Joe – had always found him to be weird – but never expected him to be capable of that. And Katie – little demure Katie – who was sitting there almost having a nervous breakdown because of it. How could she allow herself to be a part of that? Whether she was a willing participant or not. At sixteen you know the difference between right and wrong, and what they did was so obviously wrong.

Yet, she couldn’t help but feel slightly sorry for her. The situation has affected her badly. Paula listened to her sobs. Watched as her hands shook uncontrollably.

“Then what?”

“Nothing. We all went home. I was a wreck…wanted to call the police,” Katie said, inclining her head in Paula’s direction as if she would have been the officer to answer the call despite the fact that she was not even close to this area at the time and was barely at the stage of passing her entry exams. “…Joe was…Joe was on a high. Was almost dancing around in glee. It took Kev a long time to bring him down but eventually he did and the enormity of what we had done – what he had done – really hit him. They talked me out of calling the cops – especially Louise who was worried what it would do to her prospects of becoming a teacher when she left school, but I think her real concern was Joe. I think that’s why he became a police officer himself – so he could make up for what he had done that night.”

Paula wasn’t so sure. Not that she knew Joe that well but the feeling he gave off was definitely as one of those guys that joined the force so he had an outlet for his sadistic behaviour. So that – in his eyes – he had authority and the right to do whatever the hell he wanted. She had no basis for this thought other than the feeling she had when she was around him. He’d received no complaints, no disciplinaries against him. He was cleaner than clean. But upon hearing this story, it gave her feelings some validity.

“I couldn’t sleep that night – or any night after to be honest. Not until Scott came back. Not until I could finally apologise.”

Paula started to get the feeling that Katie’s belief in Scott was more to do with alleviating her guilt rather than a true belief he wasn’t responsible. More to do with the fact that she didn’t want to feel responsible – even mildly – for turning Scott into the monster he may have become. Which was ridiculous in itself.

Monsters were born. Not made.

“I cried pretty much the whole night, the whole weekend. I ignored everyone’s calls – even Louise’s.
