The (rented) home office

There’s nothing to stop you using your hostel, hotel or apartment as a workspace, and it can bring down your costs significantly. However, you may feel like a bit of a hermit if you spend all your time in one space, and there are numerous studies showing that living and working in the same small space can affect sleep patterns and stress. You will of course need access to the internet, provided for free in many hostels and hotels but not always available in rented rooms or apartments unless you pay extra.

If you have a local SIM on a 4G network, this can be a low-cost solution, but for a reliably fast internet connection, you may need to sign up with a local Internet Service Provider (ISP) and many packages are for a minimum of a year. On the other hand, you’ll have plenty of privacy for calls and facetime meetings, and you can always mix it up by working in cafes and co-working spaces.
