JAIRUS’S RESPONSE

The messengers from Jairus’s house brought the sad news that his daughter had died. It was all over, as far as they were concerned. There was no reason for Jesus to go to Jairus’s house. All hope was gone. But Jesus challenged Jairus not to fear but to keep believing. These radical commands left Jairus with a decision to make. He could accept the report of the messengers. Or he could heed the commands of Jesus. It is the choice we all have to make at some time or another. Will you believe what the circumstances say? Or will you believe what Jesus says?

Jairus chose to believe the word of the Lord. And they pressed their way to Jairus’s house.

“And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James” (Mark 5:37). This is the first of several times Jesus permits this inner circle of His disciples to be exclusive witnesses of an important moment in His ministry. Only Peter, James, and John witnessed the transfiguration of Jesus, when His divine glory shone through His human flesh (Mark 9:2). And only these three were with Jesus in His moments of agony, as He prayed to the Father in the garden of Gethsemane (Mark 14:33).

Jesus, Jairus, and the inner circle finally made it to the house: “They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly” (Mark 5:38). Bad news travels fast, doesn’t it?

By the time Jairus made it home, friends and family had already gathered. And the professional mourners were there. In the ancient Near East, the dead were buried immediately. Families paid their respects to the dead by open displays of mourning. They would hire flute players to play loudly, almost encouraging loud mourning. And they would also hire a wailing woman to lead the mourning. In fact, the wealthier the family, the more professional mourners they hired to grieve the dead. With Jairus being a ruler of the synagogue, many people gathered at the house to honor him by grieving with the family over the death of his daughter. So when Jesus arrived at the house, there was a great commotion. People were weeping and wailing loudly.
