Charities never did that. Charities shamed you for having money, and then begged you to hand it over. They didn’t seem to spend much time thinking about the wants and needs of their donors. Honestly, I think many charities wished they never had to deal with donors. Things would be much easier if they just got large grants and went about their business. But I loved our donors. I loved bringing them together at events and connecting them to one another. I loved involving them in redemptive, life-changing work and then showing them the impact of their generosity.
As we worked to build our brand, I obsessed over every detail of the donor’s experience. And I expected everyone to follow suit. Once, during preparation for a gala, Vik and I designed beautiful invitations that we worked on for weeks. We got the heavy card stock donated. Vik met with the printer countless times to make sure the invitations were perfect. We had volunteers prepare the envelopes to be mailed out. But when I went to check on their work, half the labels and stamps on the invitations were crooked. I was so angry, I lost it.
“How on earth did this happen?” I yelled at the guy in charge. “We can’t mail these beautiful invitations with crooked labels! And look at this stamp! It’s at a forty-five-degree angle!”
“Look, they’re all volunteers,” he said. “You can’t expect—”
“Wait a minute,” I shouted, interrupting him. “Are you saying that just because you’re a volunteer that means you can’t put a stamp on straight?”
I forget how the exchange ended. In fact, I think he walked out and never came back to work. I wasn’t proud of how I handled the situation, but that didn’t stop me from making the volunteers redo every envelope.
“These need to be perfect,” I said. “We’re not just mailing out party invites. We’re inviting people to save lives! Do you understand?”
