CHAPTER TWENTY ONE

In failure, they returned to the hotel. They went to the restaurant, sitting around glumly. Alicia, Mai and Kenzie watched them all eat, and then they started to drink. After food, they returned to their favourite seat in the lobby and sat around, studying each other, all waiting for someone to speak.

‘It’s not ideal,’ Hayden said finally. ‘Far from it. And we’re not used to losing-’

‘I don’t think my chicaneries have ever failed before,’ Alicia sighed.

‘Nor mine,’ Mai said glumly.

‘Forget that,’ Drake said. ‘The guy’s clearly more disciplined than we gave him credit for. Remember, he’s the head of a crime family. It’s what we do next that’s important.’

Dahl nodded. ‘And what’s that?’

Drake started talking. He went on for a while, explaining his plan. Around them, people came and went, wandered back and forth. Sometimes, they had to keep their voices low. Other times, they could speak freely. Together, they made plans for the next day.

By midnight, they were back on course, or as close to it as they possibly could be. They retired to bed and were up early the next morning, even before breakfast was served. They were out the front door and driving their cars well before dawn.

They needed to drive the route that Emiliano would take, check for dangers, cover every angle. They could leave nothing to chance.

As far as they were able.

They made several recces, walked the streets, found a place with minimal exposure. With hours still to go, they found food and drink and took a break. Soon after, they were at it again, figuring out a way to get close to Emiliano Allegri.

‘I’m dreading the next call from Karin,’ Kinimaka said. ‘This part of the mission is taking up so much time.’

Drake felt the same, but knew there was no other approach they could make. ‘We have to get close to this guy. He uses the reaper all the time.’

‘I got close to him,’ Alicia murmured. ‘Didn’t work.’

‘Today will work,’ Hayden said. ‘It has to.’

‘There’s still a lot of chance involved,’ Dahl said. ‘I’m not big on chance.’

‘Suck it up,’ Drake told him. ‘We’re out of options.’

‘Oh, I get that. Doesn’t make it any easier, though.’

‘Is this absolutely the best plan?’ Shaw asked. ‘It could get us all killed.’

‘It’s kill or be killed,’ Drake admitted. ‘The Allegri family is a serious outfit. They’re well protected. This will take all our skill.’

Cam cracked his knuckles, always ready for action.

The team looked at each other as best they could. There didn’t seem to be a lot more to say. They were about to challenge a serious crime family on its own soil, take some of them out of the game, engineer a stand up fight in the street.

‘All this to get to the reaper,’ Drake said. ‘She’s making us do this. Our friends… they’re still under protection all around the world. They’re being hunted, and so are we. The reaper won’t stop.’

‘If only we could find out who’s actually behind it all,’ Mai said.
