Chapter 17

Make a Decision Now

A woman in a white lab coat over camouflage pants and black combat boots came through the door with a clipboard in her hands. Her glasses had slid down her nose until the entirety of her eyes were well above the rim. She appeared to be in her mid-thirties with short, dark hair and had the look of a librarian with no concept of fashion.

Without taking her eyes off the clipboard, she said, “Hello, Captain Fulton. I’m Major Duncan, and I’m one of the urologists on staff here.”

“Penny, I’m going to have to call you back. The urologist is here.”

Major Duncan finally looked up as if displeased that I was on the telephone. “So, you sustained a blunt force trauma injury to your groin and testicles. How long ago did this happen?”

“I don’t know for sure. Maybe twelve or fourteen hours.”

She conducted her examination, and it was somewhat more involved than Dr. Rush’s, but there was still no coughing involved.

After removing her gloves, she sat on a short, rolling stool and began scribbling notes onto her clipboard as if she’d forgotten I was in the room. When she looked up, the expression on her face made it clear she realized I was waiting for her diagnosis.

She held up a sketch of how that part of my anatomy should look and then described what the trauma had done. “I’m going to prescribe an anti-inflammatory, some pain meds, and an antibiotic. We’ll give the swelling twenty-four hours and make a surgical decision at that point.”

“A surgical decision? What are you talking about?”

“Captain Fulton, you’ve suffered a significant injury. We’ll take another look tomorrow, and if we believe surgery is warranted, we’ll talk about the risks and potential for sterility. Do you have any children?”

I didn’t understand how diving to the ground could result in the injury she was describing, so I sat in silent disbelief.

“Captain Fulton, are you married, and do you have any children?”

I shook my head. “No, I’m not a captain, and no, I don’t have any children.”

“And are you married?”

“No. I mean, yes…yes, I’m married.”

She made a few more notes and then furrowed her brow. “Did you say you’re not a captain?”

I stared at the floor. “Would you mind giving me a moment? I need to call home, and I need to find out if Clark Johnson is out of surgery yet.”

She stood. “Of course. You could use some rest. I’ll have the nurse bring in your meds and something to help you sleep. And I’ll check on Master Sergeant Johnson.”

“Who?”

“Master Sergeant Johnson. Clark Johnson.”

I blinked as if I were trying to focus. “Oh, yeah. Thank you.”

She closed the door behind her, and I sat on the edge of the bed with my phone clamped in my fist. I dialed Penny’s number, but what was I going to tell her? How was I supposed to explain what I didn’t understand to the woman who’d been my wife for only three days?

“Okay, so tell me what’s going on.
