The car reeked thanks to Isabella’s healing gel, and even with my head sticking out the window I had to fight hard not to gag. We’d lathered it over ourselves, with a heavy emphasis on our armpits and groins. I never said it was a glamourous job. Lazlo was able to avoid smearing himself with the gel, since apparently revenants don’t sweat. His sense of smell worked fine, though, judging by his expression.

Jeremy sat in the back seat sweating buckets, looking utterly miserable.

I turned around to face him. “You would have been more comfortable if you didn’t wear your entire bloody magician’s outfit underneath the rest of the gear.”

He used his orange vest to wipe the sweat from his brow. “There are defensive spells woven into the fabric of my clothes. When you deal with the kind of people I deal with, it’s worth taking measures to protect yourself against the occasional potshot. Just a hazard of the job.”

Not a bad idea. I’d have to look into that. Maybe a chain mail shirt that could make magic bounce off it like blowflies hitting a car window. Nice idea, but there must be a reason why magical protective clothing wasn’t as prevalent as it should have been. It probably interfered with your spellcasting, or made your balls shrink.

“Just keep the work clothes on,” I said. “Your magician’s outfit might draw attention.”

“No shit, Finch.”

“One more thing about the vault. The last time I saw Penni open it, he used a drop of his own blood.”

“That’s pretty standard on high-end vaults. I’ve got something that will hopefully act as a substitute, but I’ll need to see what I’m dealing with first. Don’t forget, I haven’t seen this vault yet. I don’t know the model, the year, the dimensions. I don’t know what wards have been baked into it or even what kind of mundane locking mechanisms it uses. I may not even be able to crack it.”

“I believe in you,” I said, then glanced at Bree over in the driver’s seat.

There had been a frown on her face ever since we left the Substation.

“What?” she said, sensing my stare.

“You look worried.”

“I’m not. But Wiljara’s shitting himself. I can feel him fighting the urge to take over my body and drive this car as far away from Lilith as possible. We’re doing the exact opposite of what he told us to do.”

“Good thing he’s not our boss.”

I fiddled with my earlobe. Isabella’s purple gel had done wonders. Ten minutes after applying the stuff, I’d taken the earring off and was pleased to see the wound had healed nicely, leaving behind a tiny hole. I had to borrow tissues from Bree to get rid of the dried blood, though. I didn’t want to risk any trace of my blood being exposed within the walls of the vampire den.

We parked the Land Cruiser a few blocks away from the vampire den to ensure it didn’t show up on any of the building’s security feeds. It meant
