Why, I wondered, can’t statements like that get the public attention the conservative Jews are able to command with their latest blast against affirmative action and welfare mothers? Heading for the door, I knew the answer. It was more than a question. It was the problem.

CHAPTER 8

Price of Racial Remedies

Occasionally, in a spasm of conscience, society decides to make things right for blacks and redress a lingering injustice. When it does so, the change to a new regime will entail costs. Someone’s settled expectations will be disrupted. Others will find things more difficult or at least unfamiliar. One recurring theme in Bell’s work is that society imposes these costs on the black beneficiaries themselves—or on lower-class, blue-collar whites like Allen Bakke who are least able to afford them. Bell here addresses white resistance to affirmative action; what can happen to a black scholar who is ahead of his time (and dies an early death); and the pain of being a black child bused to a white school.
