CATS AND DOGS

Well, it wasn’t like I was going to get any sleep now. This werepanther thing was creepy, and frankly, I was a little afraid. Now I’d have to learn to control it. But Leo was probably right; I wouldn’t make a full transformation until the full moon which was a few days away.

I decided to go down to the kitchen for a cup up tea. It was still early, and I’d only really gotten a fraction of the sleep I’d wanted, but it might help me to clear my head and figure out a plan. Leo followed me down and stuck by my side like a good kitty.

I made some rooibos tea. It was gently stimulating to the brain, but would still allow me to fall back asleep if I decided I was actually drowsy. I was too tired to mess with the kettle, so I poured some filtered water from the tap into my glass mug and stuck my more human-like finger into it.

“Caldarius,” I said, and I felt the water get hot. I left my finger in the cup until I could just barely stand the heat of the water. I put in my teabag and sat by the wooden kitchen table. The hot liquid felt good going down my throat, and the tea seemed to soothe my beast. Uh, I had a beast now, I grimaced in dismay. But I did see the fur retracting, and I saw the hand returning to its human form.

Then I heard a scraping noise as Alex walked in with Paladin.

“What are you doing up?” I asked.

“Oh hi, Elle. Well, Paladin wanted out, she kept scratching my door and practically dug a hole through it. I think she wants water,” he said, rinsing out her empty water bowl and refilling it. The lights were out, and the light of the moon was coming in through the large kitchen window. Paladin walked noisily over to the water bowl.

“What is she wearing, brass knuckles?” I asked.

“I dunno,” he frowned a little, “but she sure is loud. Hey, what are you doing down here? You said you needed some sleep.”

I sighed deeply. “I have felinthropy.” My hand was mostly normal now.

“You what?”

“Remember when I got bit by that panther?” He nodded. “Well,” I shrugged, “I talked to Mother, and it turns out Dad was a were, and now I am too.”

He looked at me for a moment, like he was trying to decide if I was still human. I wasn’t. “How did you figure it out?” he asked.

I put my arm out in front of him. “Feel my arm,” I said.

He put his warm hand on my arm and felt up and down. “Oh, it’s fuzzy,” he withdrew his hand, “you need to shave, Elle,” he said slightly playfully.

“Very funny,” I said.

“But are you sure you really have this felinthropy thing?” he asked with concern.

“I’m coming down from the first attempt to change. There used to be sharp claws attached to this hand.” His eyes widened.
