As Robert droned on about himself, his family, and how he’d known this reunion was a terrible idea, I read what his father had to say about him. It wasn’t a glowing report. There was little love lost between father and son, and very little respect. I perked up as Dave asked Robert what he’d meant when he’d knelt by the body.

“You were overheard saying that too many things were left unsaid once you found your father dead. Would you care to elaborate on that?”

“Ah, trying to save your own skin by tossing me under the bus, eh?” Robert asked, raising his eyebrow as he looked at me. “I meant nothing by it. Just that we’d had some words earlier in the day and it was too bad we’d never have time to come to an agreement. That’s all.”

“If you’ll excuse my asking, it doesn’t seem like you are overly upset by your father’s passing.”

Robert raised an elegant shoulder and waved off Dave’s question, just like his father would have. I felt a momentary pang that Stephen Graff felt so beset by his family. The only people he could rely on were his butler and someone he’d hired a few days ago.

“We all have to go sometime. Father was getting up there.”

“You mentioned arguing earlier in the day,” I said, breaking into the conversation. “What was the argument about?”

I knew the chances of him owning up to what had been said were small, but I hoped maybe he’d let a hint drop unknowingly.

Robert cocked his head to the side and examined his fingernails.

“Recently, my father made, shall we say, some odd financial decisions. Honestly, I thought he was going senile. We had a few words, and that was that.”

I watched the back of Dave’s head, wishing I could see his face. A chill behind me raised the hair on the back of my neck and I heard Cornelius’ familiar voice.

“He’s lying. I overheard them and that was not the conversation.”

I nodded slightly to show him I’d heard him. Zane looked at me and I blinked hard, hoping he’d get my unspoken message.

“Where did you go when you left the den?” Zane asked.

Robert stopped examining his hands and looked at us.

“The little boy’s room. I met Eugene, and we talked about this farce before heading back to the den of vipers. See what I did there?” he asked, chuckling at his own joke.

“Eugene?”

“That’s Cindy’s husband. He’s a saint of a man to put up with my wretched sister. And their terrible children.”

“Can you think of anyone in your family who would want to end your father’s life?”

Robert smirked and went back to looking at his fingernails.

“Would want to end, or would actually have the guts to do the deed? There’s a difference, you know. My father was... difficult. I don’t believe I’d ever actually wished the old man harm, but we didn’t like each other. There was no friendly father and son banter with us. As for everyone else? Who knows? Anything is possible.
