EXCERPTS FROM LITERARY SOURCES

Anonymous. The History of Titus Andronicus, The Renowned Roman General (ca. 1736–1764)

As explained above, this possible source, first discovered in an anonymously authored chapbook in the eighteenth century, may be a copy or an adaptation of a lost work that Shakespeare used for his play. Other scholars think it was written later and adapted from Shakespeare’s play or some other retelling of it. The History at first gives an account of many events not included in Shakespeare’s play and leaves out some events that Shakespeare includes in act 1, such as the sacrifice of Tamora’s son Alarbus and Titus’s killing of his own son Mutius. Starting with Chapter III, the History more closely parallels the plot of the play.
