Before them was a vast circular clearing, a fortress of thick ropey trees surrounding its periphery. The camp itself was little more than a flat ring of hard-packed black soil dotted with identical square huts—twenty or so. In the center of the clearing, a strong fire burned. The smell of smoke made the crew’s stomachs growl.

Marie moved to stand by the fire, her face tight with concentration as if she were puzzling out a difficult equation. Then her shoulders pulled back, and she looked up at the group.

“Emergency vote!” Marie called out, cupping her hands around her mouth.

The thin kids hurried to gather around her. Marie made no indication that the Defiant crew should join them, so they remained by the edge of the clearing, watching. When the last thin kid had settled into the group, Marie called out in a clear, loud voice once again.

“Move to suspend food distribution to lend necessary mangos to the sick boy. All those in favor?” Around her, every single hand shot high into the air. Marie looked over their heads and locked eyes with Esme.

“That’s settled, then. Esme, you follow me.”
