Chapter Twelve
Declan closed the distance between them but stopped short before touching her. He didnât know whether she needed a hug or tissues, so he wound up patting her shoulder.
Like an asshole.
âThe way you talk about himâ¦the way everyone talks about him.â Phinny pressed her palm flat to her forehead. âIt was so much easier when I thought he was a cold-hearted bastard. Not one person has confirmed my mumâs stories about the way he abandoned her on this god-forsaken ranch while he went gallivanting about the country playing hockey and filming commercials. And now Iâll never know the man I was taught not to love.â Her features screwed up, and she cried in earnest.
Heâd never felt so helpless. He didnât know what to do, so he crouched in front of her. Heâd only meant to be there for her, a quiet support, but she misunderstood his intentions and fell against him. Her body shook, her tears soaked his T-shirt, and he couldnât take it. He just couldnât take this womanâs sorrow.
Grabbing under her arms, he lifted her out of the chair and sat her on the counter. She flopped against him, her face tucked into his neck, and she wept. He didnât think anything he had to say would help, so he just held her tightly.
When the tears subsided, she let out a few shuddery breaths. Sitting up, she said, âIâm sorry. Iâm getting your shirt wet.â
âI donât give a damn about my shirt.â
âYouâre a good man, Declan Cadell. Donât let anyone tell you otherwise.â Laughing, she reached for a paper towel and blotted the tears.
âDo you want to go into town and get strawberry ice cream from Bliss?â
She shook her head. âItâs fine. Iâll be fine. Itâs all just overwhelming. Youâll take me to see Glori tomorrow, though, right? If I start to bawl, I want you to pinch me really hard.â
âWonât that make you cry harder?â
âNo, Iâll be too pissed at you.â
He grinned. âOkay, you got it.â But she still looked so sad. âHow about we raid Kurtâs wine cellar?â
âOh, God, no more wine.â
âAll right, then name something. Anything. Youâre killing me here. Let me do one thing to make you happy.â
Whatever heâd said, it lit a fire in her eyes. Slowly, she broke into a sexy smile. âWell, there is one thing I want.â
âName it.â
âAnd youâll give it to me, no matter what?â
âAlmost anything. I wonât walk away from this ranch, and Iâm not willing to go into debt for you, so you can forget a shopping expedition to Paris. But anything elseâ¦the answer is yes.â
Behind her devilish grin was a vulnerability. âI want you.â And he really fucking liked the confidence it took to ask for what she wanted.
He arched a brow, giving her attitude to cover the punch of desire that made him go painfully hard.
âOne night. Not even a whole night. I want to be with a man who likes giving women pleasure.â
Is she serious about this shit? Hell, yeah, heâd give her pleasure.
