Iranian officials and state-run media organizations falsely accused Sweden of encouraging and supporting a spate of Quran burnings in Sweden, in what Swedish officials characterized as a disinformation campaign aimed at discrediting Sweden’s bid to join NATO and deflecting attention from Iran’s domestic issues.

Iranian state media made unsubstantiated claims that the U.S. military had seized Syria’s oil fields and was “stealing” its oil. The claims appeared to be in response to a new European Parliament report detailing Syria’s human rights shortcomings. A July 17, 2023, article on the Iranian state news website PressTV said that the United States is “illegally occupying Syria with nearly 1,000 troops and has seized the country’s oil fields in cooperation with local anti-Damascus militants and terrorist groups while stealing its crude supplies and wheat and transferring them across the border to its bases in Iraq.” The Islamic Republic’s Tasnim News Agency website made the same claim.

Iranian state-run newspapers and websites pounced on the Wagner Group’s failed June 23, 2023, armed rebellion in Russia by promoting claims that NATO orchestrated the uprising. A large headline on the front page of the pro-Tehran government daily newspaper Kayhan on June 25, 2023, stated, “NATO Resorted to the Treachery of Wagner to Compensate for the Defeat on the Battlefield,” calling Wagner’s paramilitary boss, Yevgeny Prigozhin, “NATO’s proxy arm.” A June 24, 2023, article from the Iranian state-run Tasnim News stated, “Some analysts believe that last night’s Wagner operation is a security intelligence measure by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.” These Iranian websites have versions and associated accounts on American social media platforms available in other languages in various countries around the world. It’s how their messages achieve scale.
