Learning to do is therefore indispensable to individual growth in developing the foundational skills to enable people to live a full life as well as make a living, and to do things out of the ordinary, but equally to do ordinary things that can have an extraordinary impact on the lives of others. Many jobs may not offer the deep learning that this presupposes, as the skills to execute the work can be quickly learned. But the education we are advocating is for life, not just for paid work. The key challenge is to reform existing models of education, training, and lifelong learning in ways that enable a much closer relationship between knowing and doing.
