Chapter 25

THERE WAS NO ONE outside Suzerain’s bungalow, which was an oddity in itself. But Vogel was too worked up to fully register the lack of any guards. He’d just seen two of his men brutally murdered by Terrence Rubble, and he’d been boiling with rage ever since. He’d come straight back with the two surviving men and made a beeline for Beck.

He barged through the front door, stopping cold as he saw Beck in the middle of snorting a line of white powder from the glass coffee table flanked by two plush couches. Suzerain straightened up, his eyes red and alight with anger. He was on his feet in a moment, barreling toward Vogel, small metal straw still in his hand.

“What the fuck are you doing, barging in here like that?” he said, snarling. He grabbed Vogel by the neck with one thick hand. He was strong. And even though Vogel had a good twenty pounds and four inches on the man, he was unsure of the outcome were there to be a fight.

But he knew better than to resist. It would do nothing good for him. “I’m sorry, Suzerain,” he rasped out. He looked down into the smaller man’s icy eyes, hoping to convey not only fear and sorrow, but to try and get Suzerain to remember who he was. They had an agreement, after all. Vogel didn’t care if he was doing drugs. He wasn’t here to follow the man. He was here to serve, and to take advantage of all that came along with it.

Beck let him go with a shove. He turned around and went back over to the coffee table. “Lock the fucking door,” he said, getting back down on his knees.

As Vogel turned to engage the deadbolt, he heard the snorting sound of Beck finishing the line of coke. He then stepped over behind one of the leather couches, looking down at the man. There was a sandwich bag half-filled with white powder sitting just outside a gilded wooden box. The box’s lid was open, allowing Vogel to see an array of different drugs—some in pill form, some in powder, and some in liquid.

He was careful not to keep his gaze on the box for long. Instead, he looked at Beck, who seemed to be collecting himself as he wiped up powder residue with his finger and then stuck the digit in his mouth, rubbing it along his gums.

“I need help every now and again,” Beck said, his benevolent voice back in place. “The demands put on me to lead this flock can be wearying. So I . . . indulge from time to time. And lately, with the problems we’ve been having . . . with the agents of darkness gathering . . .” he trailed off, looked up at Vogel. “What’s so important you couldn’t knock?”

Vogel swallowed, his hands clasped in front of him. “Where are your guards, Suzerain?”

“My guards are mine to do with as I please. Or have you forgotten who’s in charge here?”

Vogel was stalling, and he knew it.
