The Becklesfield Church Hall was a new building next to the old church. New compared to the church, but still sixty years since it had been opened by the Mayor. Betty remarked sheâd had her fortieth wedding anniversary party there. Abigail had started one of their line-dancing classes on a Thursday morning but found out she was hopeless, so gave that up. She was even worse at the tap dancing on a Friday afternoon. She was pleased to think she didnât have to worry about putting any weight on now or keeping fit.
There was a good turnout for âThe Psychic World of Hayley Moonâ. Four rows of mostly women sat enthralled at her talk. She was explaining about the different angels and their names with the help of a slide show. Next, she went on to explain what the different colours of orbs meant. I must ask her what colour I am, thought Abigail. Hopefully not grey. Iâve always been particularly fond of pink. Not a bright one, a nice pastel would be perfect. Hayley seemed to be already surrounded with orbs and the classic mist of Deads. Poor Hayley. They all seemed to be vying for her attention and talking to her at once. It hadnât occurred to her before just how hard it must be for Hayley. Night and day most likely. Did she ever get any peace from those trying to get in touch with their families through her? Sewing was bad enough with the phone going all the time, but at least she could unplug it. Hayley was at their mercy all the time. It must be relentless. Perhaps they shouldnât mention that Jason fellow. It was probably just to say heâd got a dog stuck indoors without food or something. She didnât like to think of some little dog or cat starving to death or dying of thirst, so she decided to mention it now they were there. Itâs not like she was asking her to investigate a murder like before. There was definitely no hurry.
Hayley must have given in to one of the spirits on stage as she said, âIâve got a gentleman here called Gordon. Heâs very persuasive and bossy. He wants to talk to his daughter, Margie. Where is Margie?â Abigail and Betty started to feel sorry for Hayley, as it looked like there was no one called that there. âCome on, Margie. Gordon says youâre in the third row, second from the end. Everyone turned to look. Tentatively a small mousey woman of about thirty raised her hand and stood up.
âIâm Margie.â
âAnd your dad was Gordon?â
âYes.â
âHe says youâre still his beautiful little dumpling. And everything is going to be alright from now on; you can tell your mum. She needs to know, and it will cheer her upâ¦â¦Really? Oh thatâs wonderful. You lost a baby last year, he says, and you donât want to jinx it or get too excited, but your little baby boy will be here in time for Christmas.
