Chapter

“Will his new girlfriend Trixie be there?” Bishop asked.

“What, dude?” Eva asked amused.

“It seems like we’re going to your ex’s for dinner,” Bishop said as the black limousine rushed through the neon-lit Hong Kong night. It was late, and few cars hindered their progress.

It was the first time the two of them had been alone since leaving Paul’s office. The flight over had been packed with fellow agents. MI6 was leaving nothing to chance. They’d launch the King’s corgis from a cannon if it meant apprehending Horatio Lancing. Eva and Bishop sat next to each other in the back of the car on the way to the hotel.

“I guess we are, yeah. And he doesn’t know I’m bringing the current bloke with me,” Eva added.

Bishop cocked an eyebrow. “Current?”

“Maybe current.” She ran a finger down his trouser leg. “If you play your cards right.”

“Cards? Like strip poker?”

“I’m awful at card games, Bishop.”

His smile was luminescent. “I know.”

Eva sighed. “Stop being such a good-looking bastard, could you?”

Bishop shrugged. “You may as well ask the sun to stop shining, the tides to cease or passengers to remain seated when the plane comes to a halt but the fasten seatbelt light is still on. Some things you have no power over.”

She knew Bishop was doing his best to keep her mind off what was about to happen. Harry Lancing had exerted his power on her life yet again. Since the moment she’d first laid eyes on him in her coffee shop all those years ago, Eva had never been able to shake his influence. Even when he was meant to be locked away in the most secure prison on the planet he found a way to pull Eva into his chaotic orbit. Was now the time to rescind the power he had over her life? Was this finally the moment Eva could step out of his shadow?

On the flight over, the plan had been created, scrutinised, pulled apart and reconstructed. MI6 was taking no chances. The hotel would be sealed tight—a rat’s flea would have little chance of escaping. It fell to Eva to be the bait. She would proceed to reception and call for him to come down. They would nab him there. If he refused to come down they would go get him themselves. The Operations team were confident they could achieve a simple extraction. But in Eva’s experience, nothing was ever simple with Harry Lancing.

Like the moment before she’d stepped into the room at Wakefield Prison, Eva again wondered how she was going to react when she finally came face to face with the man who had once been her everything. Punching things was often a first reaction, but Eva doubted that would be the case now, although she was reluctant to rule it out entirely. Speaking of ruling things out…

“By the way, Bishop, you’re not allowed to shoot him, okay?”

Mock appalled, he said, “Why would I do that?”

“Because he tried to kill you. Several times over. You’re not exactly besties.
