Taking great care, I stepped closer to the rock face. It shone, the light internal, as if I could see the energy between the atoms. Woody remained in place, his orders clear. Reaching out, I ran a hand over the rocks, they felt real, solid, warmed from the dayâs sun. Their rough surface reassured me.
âBrother.â
My head shot up and turned. âAhmar?â From the shadows stepped a figure, manifest in my world for the first time, clothed in his usual robe but this one of the deepest blue. He wore a midnight dark scarf over his face covering his mouth, so only his glittering black eyes were clear.
I glanced back at Woody. He stood, eyes wide and his mouth slightly open in shock. âHow?â he whispered. âIs thatâ¦?â
I nodded. âIt is. Just stay with it, donât panic and donât do anything thatâll set off that bloody vest.â
He glanced down at himself as if heâd forgotten the terrible danger we were in from mundane forces. âYeah, okay. Sure.â
I retrained my focus on Ahmar, trying to work out whether the bomb vest really was the most dangerous thing we were facing right now. My relationship with Ahmar held so many strands and each new one came with a series of compromises we had to negotiate.
âHow is this happening?â I asked the djinn.
âYou are between worlds. A place the djinn know well.â
âJust you?â I asked.
He laughed, a rich sound as always. âNo, brother. This place is for all beings who must move between worlds in order to exist in your plane.â
âHow have we never done this before?â I asked.
He shrugged. âThe pockets are rare and becoming rarer. It is what you might think of as the land of faerie.â
My mind flooded with all the stories Heather had shared with me about ancient myths of Britain and Ireland. âI donât think I can handle this, Ahmar.â
I saw the smile in his eyes because I knew him so well. âIt is not something you should find easy, and not a place you should remain in for long. It is not safe for you.â
âThen can you take me to where this thing is? I donât know how long Woody has in that vest before something goes wrong.â
Ahmar sniffed. âYou could just leave him.â
Woody made a sound of protest, but I held my hand up. I didnât want him talking to Ahmar. The djinn was far too clever. He only put up with me because without me, heâd have no usable host, and heâd be stuck here.
âLetâs just say we keep Woody alive if you want to continue our relationship,â I said and didnât bother hiding my sarcasm.
Ahmar huffed, the robe rising and falling as if he were a petulant five-year-old. âThis way.â He turned and walked towards the cliff.
Woody grabbed my arm. âI donât understand whatâs happening.â
âJust donât let go. Whatever you do, donât let go. Heâs not going to let me die here.â
âYou live with him inside your head? He looks terrifying.â
I frowned. âWhat do you mean?â
âLorne,â Ahmarâs command tugged at me.
