There hadnât been any more dreams about Griffin, just his voice calling her. But then, what was the point in dreaming? If she wanted to see him again, sheâd need to make it become a reality, and not count on dreams.
She got out of her bed and saw Larzen and Mauro sleeping, but no Riadne.
The redhead was outside, holding the book with the Solana potions, running her hand over it, her face wistful. There was sadness there. Zora sighed. She and Mauro had agreed that they had to tell Riadne the truth, but now she was second-guessing it.
She raised her eyes and gave Zora a thin smile.
âReading?â Zora sat by her.
She looked at the book. âWing cake.â She had a bitter chuckle. âIs it too much to hope that somehow our solution could have been in a book all this time? Or is it ironic that it could be so simple?â
âYouâre worried about your brother,â Zora said.
âAnd myself too. Maybe Iâm wondering whatâs going to happen.â Riadne bit her lip, then looked away, at the ocean, her eyes lost.
Zora was wondering if Riadne would ask again about the truth balsam, give her an opening to mention it, but she didnât. Zora would need to bring up the truth. She took a deep breath, then said, âI⦠made the potion you asked me.â
âHum. Yes, maybe it could make a difference.â Riadne didnât sound interested.
âI⦠it wasnât my fault,â Zora blurted. âIt was an accident. It was Mauro, but he didnât know you were going to drink itââ
Riadne frowned. âSay it.â
âIt wasnât on purpose, but⦠there was some of the truth balsam in the wine yesterday.â
The redhead froze and stared at Zora. âIn the wine?â
âWhich you drank.â Zora bit her lip.
âWhat?â Riadne got up and put her hands on her head. âYou know what it means?â
That Zora was a horrible person? But she just shook her head.
âI could be misunderstanding this book. Itâs over four hundred years old. Words change. Meanings might have changed. What you gave me was likely some kind ofâ¦â She paused. âStupid decision potion.â
âIt could be the truth.â
Riadne rolled her eyes. âNo.â She chuckled. âDefinitely not.â
âIâm sorry.â
She waved a hand. âIt was my idea, in a way. Iâm sure you meant well.â Still, Riadneâs voice was tight. She was angry.
âDid something bad happen? Between you and Larzen?â
The false princess shook her head. âNothing happened. Nothing important, at least.â
âShould I tell Larzen about the potion?â
âOh yes, that will be wonderful.â Her tone was sarcastic. âThen heâll think I forced him like I did with his baby brother.â
âNobody said that.â
âSay whatever you want.â Riadne picked up the book and walked away.
Zora had no doubt that the false princess and Larzen had gotten together the previous night. In fact, Riadne had admitted as much. What she didnât understand was why all of a sudden it seemed like a problem. Perhaps it had been the potion that made it all wrong somehow. Damn Mauro. And Riadne. And everyone.
But then, the important thing was getting to Rock Island.
