DIANE

“The Imperial Majesty won’t be returning for another hour,” Patha said. “I don’t know if you should wait in her office. You know she doesn’t like that.”

Diane was hoping that the Imperial Majesty hadn’t told her trusted assistant that the ambassador was on a short leash and not allowed near the Imperial Majesty’s office, let alone allowed in it. Otherwise, her plan would be doomed from the start.

“It’s okay, Patha,” Diane said. “I have a lot of reading to do to prepare for this meeting anyway.” Diane held up her data pod. “I need a quiet place where I won’t be disturbed. The Imperial Majesty’s office is perfect.”

Patha frowned. “All right, I suppose it’s okay this one time, given the circumstances.”

Whew, Diane thought. She had cleared that hurdle, but she still had more hurdles to go.

Now if she could remember how Cal had explained the new data-to-audio transfer technology. She wished she had paid better attention, but she’d figured Cal was just being Cal, and she would never need to use it. But now, with the orbiting Permidium ship blocking all long-range audio, video, and data transmissions from Vernius, it was the only way she could think of to get a message out to Cal, Jake, or anyone in the Legion. She needed to tell them how Sloan was using Cal’s transponder to control the Permidiums, and more important, that it might possibly tell them how to destroy the Permidium ships.

Diane shut the door, hurried to the Imperial Majesty’s desk, sat down, and turned on her computer. She closed her eyes and thought back just a short time ago to the demonstration by Cal.
