MECKLENBURG COUNTY 1868
Major Michael Bridge was not crazy.
He did, on occasion, like to slip into the past, and relive his favorite days. Days that were undoubtedly more exhilarating than those he was living at present. But contrary to the belief of his detractors, he was able to separate fiction from reality. Usually, the problem with this fact was that it was boring for the old Major. Things hadn't been easy after the war for Confederate soldiers, and he didn't want to run away, didn't want to settle. He wanted the land that he deserved, and he was willing to fight for it.
One year ago, Michael had returned to Virginia after his loss against the Union Army. While he was revered by many in his county, the tides were shifting. Despite everything, he still thought of himself as a national hero. He felt like the country owed him a debt and he wanted to be paid in land. Fortunately, he had friends in high places and a few tricks up his sleeve.
The old soldier had a specific plot of land in mind, and he dreamed of living on a big beautiful lake. The problem was that many dead townspeople were buried on this land, and his fight to get the deed in his name was gaining a lot of interest. People thought he was crazy, and people were vehemently against his pursuit. He was slowly collecting enemies, but he didn't care, as long as he got what he wanted, what he deserved.
Fortunately for the Major, unfortunately for the townspeople, the town's mayor was a dear old friend, and he owned Michael a favor. In fact, they were such good friends that Michael had a luncheon scheduled at the mayor's house that very afternoon. He was going to make his case and finalize the paperwork for that land.
As he approached the mayor's manor, he was surprised to see a crowd of people out front. Word of his lunch had evidently gotten around, and the townspeople were determined to have their say in the matter. As he made his way up the drive, new energy spread through the crowd. They started pointing fingers and shouting angrily.
He strode confidently towards them, hands stretched out wide, beckoning for them to calm down. He cleared his throat loudly, and they quieted enough to allow him to speak. He looked into the crowd and took them in. His striking blue eyes highlighted his face, and he was handsome for a man in his fifties.
"Thank you. You all know, I fought hard in the trenches for what was best for this country. I watched men die in war, and I nearly got killed myself. One of the lessons I took from serving was that life is not guaranteed, and therefore we should live life to the fullest. I will not let my American dream die, and I deserve to be compensated for my service to this country, no matter who won. I made great sacrifices, and now this is a sacrifice that this county, this land, owes me in return.
