Mercy

“I missed his heart!” I cried after we plummeted to Joel’s family room floor. I jumped to my feet, pacing across the room. “Dammit!”

Joel looked panicked. “Are you guys okay? What happened?”

“I missed. That’s what happened. I had Maurice and Julian in the same room, along with this psychopath female witch, and I missed his heart!”

I placed my hands on my head, gripping at my hair. “We leave tomorrow for Canada. We can’t do anything without Dante’s help to bring the coven back. It’s not safe for us here anymore.”

Joel nodded. “Dorian, call Noah and make sure he doesn’t go back to the house. I’ll head to the market to grab you what you guys need for your trip and put a protective spell over the house. No one leaves here until you’re going through a portal and out of the country.”

I felt Dorian’s hands over my arms, rubbing my skin gently until I relaxed.

I turned around and placed my hand on his cheek. “I need to take a shower. All I feel are Maurice’s hands all over me.”

Dorian frowned and backed up, slightly lowering his head. I knew this was torturing him to no end because all he wanted to do was rip Maurice’s head off just as much as I did.

“I’ll call Noah, then pour us a glass of wine,” Dorian said.

I gave him a weak smile. “That is exactly what I need right now.”

I heard Joel’s keys rattle in the kitchen. “Mercy, once I head out the door, the shield will go up around the house. Call me if you guys need anything.”

“Thanks, Joel,” I said.

I turned back to Dorian and stepped toward him, reaching out my hand and pulling him to me slowly, but I lost my words. I removed my hand and padded to the guest bathroom.

The water hit my skin hotter than usual, and I let it burn my backside. I inhaled the steam around me. I squeezed the soap in the luffa and scrubbed my skin until it felt raw. It didn’t matter because I’d heal physically. Getting Maurice out of my head was another thing altogether. How did this happen?

Why do I keep failing and letting him beat me over and over again?

Time slowed down for a short moment, and I plugged my foot over the drain, letting the water build up in the tub, and sank into the warm bath. I closed my eyes and spoke to my powers. I called on the water, which grew hotter than it had been when it came from the showerhead. This would burn any human to the point of second, or third-degree burns, but not me. It hurt like hell, but I endured it. I didn’t know why I wanted to feel this kind of pain, but I did.

Was I punishing myself? Did I deserve this?

I slowed my powers down as I grimaced at the pain. I cooled it down slightly and opened my eyes. The room was so steamy now, I couldn’t see in front of me.
