DEEP BREATHS

Betsy Weber

Betsy scrubbed her hands with the antiseptic gel and started waving them. She, Nancy, and Gaby wore trash bag ponchos pulled over their heads and bandanas tied around their mouths. Gaby was struggling to pull a sterile glove over her hand. Close to tears, the young girl’s lip trembled.

“The gel has to dry, or you can’t get the glove on,” Betsy explained. “Shake your hands off.”

A minute later, Gaby pulled the gloves over her hands and gave Betsy a big blue thumbs-up.

“I’m going to need help here,” Nancy said. “She’s dilated. I think the baby is moving into the birth canal.” Nancy’s complexion was a pasty white, and she looked like she was about to pass out.

“Deep breaths,” Betsy said.

Camila groaned. “I thought I was supposed to shallow breathe!”

Betsy pointed at her. “You are.” Then she pointed to Nancy. “She’s not.”

Camila chuckled, but it was quickly replaced with a grimace. “I’m going to need that spoon.”

Gaby handed the wooden spoon she’d found to her mother.

“Breath!” Nancy’s hands opened like she’d be hit by lighting. “We’re going to need to clear the baby’s airway. We need a bulb syringe to clean out his nose and mouth.”

“Can you use something else?” Betsy asked. “We’re kind of limited.”

Nancy thought for a moment. “What about a turkey baster?”

Gaby’s eyes brightened, and she darted off to the corner of the room.

Nancy started breathing heavily. “Okay. Easy Camila. I see the baby’s head.”

Betsy’s lip curled. “What’s over it?” She whispered.

“What’s over what?!” Camila shouted.

Nancy glared at Betsy. “It’s perfectly normal. It’s a membrane. I need to take hold of it and—"

Betsy turned away, gagging as Nancy released the amniotic fluid.

“Perfectly normal,” Nancy repeated as her cheeks turned light green. “Did you find anything, Gaby?”

“Got it!” Gaby raced back, opening a sealed package.

Betsy glanced at the label and chuckled.

Camila screamed.

“Easy. Easy.” Nancy said.

“I’m not a horse!” Camila shouted.

“Will this thing work?” Gaby asked as she tugged a device from the package.

“We need to sterilize it, but that’s perfect,” Nancy said.

Betsy grabbed the rubbing alcohol and poured it all over the bulb and tubing.

“What is it?” Camila asked.

Before Betsy could stop Gaby, the young girl triumphantly blurted out, “It’s a transmission fluid siphon pump!”

“STOP!” Camila shouted, then laid back and bit on the spoon.

“Good. Good.” Nancy said. “Push. Here comes the head.”

“Don’t use car equipment on my baby!” Camila screamed.

“It’s new, and we sterilized it,” Betsy said.

Camila’s protests were unintelligible as she chomped down on the spoon.

CLANG! CLANG! CLANG! Three metal gongs rang through the room.

Betsy swore. “Not now!”

“Open the door!” The man in the hallway shouted.

Camila yanked the spoon from her mouth, and the stream of profanities that spewed out would make a drunken sailor sound like a prude. She called the man every curse word Betsy had ever heard and others she hadn’t. She swore in English and Spanish, then switched to insulting every attribute of manliness the guard might have and continued to heap insults onto his mother and all of his ancestors as well.
