Benefits

Sage is known today for its antibacterial, anti-fungal, antiviral, astringent, secretion-promoting and perspiration inhibiting properties. It is widely used internally for indigestion, and externally for inflammation of the mucous membranes of gums, mouth, nose, throat and tongue. Sage is a popular herbal remedy for menopausal hot flushes and night sweats. Sage extracts (Menosan), for example, were found in a recent, randomized, double-blind placebo controlled study involving 39 women to decrease the frequency of hot flushes by 56 per cent over a period of 8 weeks, versus a 5 per cent increase in frequency among those taking inactive placebos.

Sage is also used to reduce the flow of breast milk during weaning, reduce excessive salivation and perspiration and to ease intestinal infections such as diarrhoea and vomiting. It can help respiratory infections such as laryngitis and tonsillitis, relieve indigestion (dyspepsia) and is said to boost memory and concentration and act as a mental stimulant. It can also be applied as a compress to promote wound healing.

Dose

Sage tea: add 1 tablespoon dried sage to a cup of boiling water and infuse for 20 minutes.

Tincture: 2–5 ml.

Contraindications

• Sage stimulates uterine contractions, and should therefore be avoided during pregnancy, although small amounts are safe for use in cooking. It should not be used during breast-feeding other than for its ability to dry up milk.

• Sage should be avoided by those with epilepsy.
