Chapter 10

“What in the name of the Founders were you thinking?” Professor Quaith demanded. His flushed cheeks and narrowed eyes stood in stark contrast to the jovial professor Emma had met only days earlier. His eyes flicked between the three girls, though Emma could have sworn he focused more on Isabelle and her than on Kyra.

“Professor,” Emma began. “We weren’t going to hurt each other.” She looked down under his glare. “Or at least we didn’t intend to.”

“You nearly killed each other and got caught by an arch mage. Could you have been any more foolish to go out the same night as an intrusion into the Tower?”

Emma perked up at that. She hadn’t heard it called an intrusion. The term she’d heard repeated by the gossip mill was “haunting” or “ghost.” She opened her mouth to speak - to ask more about the intrusion - but the professor continued over her.

“Do not speak. I don’t need to know the reason, and I fear you opening your mouth could prove me wrong in my estimation of your foolishness.”

Emma’s cheeks burned, in part from embarrassment and partly from anger. There was no need to insult them like that. It had been a mistake, yes. Potentially a deadly mistake, but they were students. That had to be expected, didn’t it?

He sighed. “I suppose I should expect nothing less from teenage girls. What do you have to say for yourself, Kyra?”

Kyra kept her mouth closed for several long seconds, but something in the man’s tone of voice, or the look he gave her, convinced her to speak. “I regret going out tonight to duel.”

“And you?” he asked Isabelle.

“I just followed my friend,” she challenged. “I didn’t engage in the duel.”

“No, but you did break curfew and failed to notify the proper authorities of the duel about to take place. Let me ask you - if every girl in the Tower jumped from the roof, would you?”

Isabelle snorted. “Of course not. I’m not stupid.”

“And yet you followed the stupid actions of a fellow teenage girl without question,” he again pointed at Emma.

“Maybe if you chose better prefects that didn’t pick fights with first year students you wouldn’t have had this problem.”

Emma thought the professor couldn’t get any angrier. She was wrong.

Magic crackled around him and it seemed like he would incinerate Isabelle on the spot. “Why you insolent...”

“Professor,” Kyra snapped in a sharp tone.

The feeling of magic faded and the professor shook his head. Instead of scolding Kyra for her tone, he instead pointed at the door. “You all may go, now. Report to Professor McGarvon immediately. And you’re lucky Arch Mage O’Leary assigned this punishment. I would not have been so lenient.” That last bit seemed intended to re-assert his power, after being scolded by the prefect.

What is going on between the professor and Kyra? Emma wondered. For him to accept such a commanding tone from Kyra and not say anything bothered her.
