Alice
We had been walking for an hour or so after exiting the small forest that surrounded the village that we had saved, all around us were miles and miles of barren plains everywhere. Dying trees, plants, and even a few animals could be seen but it still didnât make it any better knowing that all of this was because of the curse that the Red Queen had cast. âEvelyn, how much longer do we have until we reach the castle?â I asked, looking at her. She was the only one who had come with me. Marcus had been left behind to learn how to control his powers with Clover, who had knowledge of his kind of powers. The Tweedles had gone ahead with Avery to check for an entrance and for any enemies.
She took out a map from her back pocket and kneeled, opening the map and placing it on the ground. âWell, we should be right in the middle of this desert or plains, so we have around ten more miles to cover before we reach the castle, probably by nightfall,â she replied, showing me the path on the map. I nodded as I studied the map and noticed a shortcut to the castle.
âWhat if we take this path? It seems to take us to the castle much faster than walking all the way there by the main path,â I asked, looking at her as I pointed to the short cut. She looked at it for a few seconds before nodding
âI think we could give it a try. Iâve never come this close to the red castle, so I donât know whatâs waiting for us there. Weâd better be alert while crossing it,â she said, folding the map again and placing it back in her pocket before getting up and brushing off her jeans. âAll right, the path should be to our left if we continue on this path for a few more miles,â she pointed out as we continued walking forward on the same path weâd been on.
As sheâd said, a few miles later we saw the sign that said: âDevilâs Cross, enter at your own peril.â Evelyn read it aloud before looking at me.
âWell, that sounds fun. Letâs go before we regret everything,â I told her, grabbing her hand and walking toward the entrance to the shortcut. As we walked through it, I felt Evelyn squeeze my hand, and I think she was scared because of the voices that could be heard all around us, warning us to go back and never return and that we would die a gruesome death if we continued down this path. I took out one of my knives and kept walking, not letting go of Evelynâs hand. âDonât let go of my hand. We will get through this quickly,â I told her as we quickened our pace through the shortcut.
âAlice, Iâm really scared. Can we get out of here? I donât mind taking the longer path to the castle. I just donât want to stay here any longer,â Evelyn said to me.
