I awakened the day after my big decision to take some time off, ready to begin phoning my clients to break the news to them. But when I reached over to make the first call, the phone rang. I answered it. Susan, a close friend, wanted me to schedule a meeting with some desperate people, a woman named Sonya and her boyfriend, Steve.

When I told her that I just couldn’t do it right now, she literally begged me to meet with them—as a favor to her. Sonya was twenty-three years old and she had been diagnosed with cervical cancer. Reluctantly, I agreed to meet with Sonya, never anticipating how she was about to throw me for a loop.

When I met Sonya and Steve, they began to tell me the facts:

Sonya, a beautiful French Canadian woman with long, gorgeous hair and a strong French accent, had seen her gynecologist, a well-respected doctor in Los Angeles. When he told her she had a serious problem—cervical cancer—Sonya was shocked, unable to imagine how this could happen to her. She also was informed that she needed a radical hysterectomy as well as the removal of some of her lymph nodes.

Needless to say, she was terrified, shocked, and depressed. She always had wanted children, and both she and Steve were in disbelief. Sonya not only wanted to live; she also wanted to have a child someday. Maybe another doctor would have a different opinion and offer an easier, milder healing possibility that was effective but not so dangerous and radical.

Steve arranged a meeting with a reputable doctor at a well-respected cancer institution, but the new doctor agreed that Sonya needed a radical hysterectomy and the removal of some of her lymph nodes—right away. Once back in California, they decided to go for a third opinion, to a top oncologist. While Sonya was waiting for results, her original gynecologist was so furious that she had the audacity to seek other opinions, she pressured Sonya into having a biopsy to confirm her diagnosis. “You need a radical hysterectomy and a removal of some of your lymph nodes,” said the doctor, agreeing with all the rest.

When they finished their story, I told them that if they wanted to go outside the medical system, it would be a massive undertaking. Over a four-hour period, I explained, as best I could, that the intensity of the needed protocol to possibly reverse her cancer would be a massive challenge for everyone. “Everyone who knows and loves you,” I warned her, “will think you’re insane for even attempting it. If you cross the line and choose to try something alternative, the amount of criticism and lack of agreement you’ll be facing are going to be insane.” I needed to prepare them both for imminent emotional battering.

Sonya and Steve needed to fully understand the stress and pressure that would come from family, friends, and the medical community as they went against their doctors’ suggestions. It was the same old problem. We all were
