Dimas Harbor, Pinar del Rio, Cuba
Dawson gripped the Diver Propulsion Vehicle with both hands, the jet dragging him through the water rapidly toward their target. He checked right, confirming Mickey was still with him, then returned to his mental preparations as he went through every possible scenario as to what was about to happen and what could go wrong. Ideally, theyâd reach the boat undetected, plant their explosives, back off to a safe distance, detonate them, then return to the submarine. The most likely thing that would go wrong is that the boat was already out of the water, though if it were, Langley should have updated him. The next most likely would be that they were spotted and engaged.
The plan then was to back off immediately should that occur. There was no way two men could take on scores of heavily armed defenders. This was a covert op, and if there were any indication it would fail, they were to fall back and make a second attempt on land. Unfortunately, that second attempt would then no longer have the element of surprise, and he was determined not to put his men at risk if he could get his charges in place. His heads-up display indicated he was less than 50 meters from their target, with the distance rapidly closing overhead. Vessels of various sizes, none too large, passed by, the civilian port active despite the military activity.
30 meters.
He adjusted his heading slightly.
âControl, Zero-One, going dark, over.â
âCopy that, Zero-One, good hunting, out.â
He disabled his long-range comms. They didnât want to risk detection with unnecessary chatter, though their short-range comms between him and Mickey were still active should it become necessary.
20 meters.
He released the trigger on the DPV then let go of the device that would be essential to a swift escape, leaving it in a hover mode that would keep it in position. He kicked toward the hull, now clearly in sight, and frowned. It was no longer parallel to the shore, but instead perpendicular, indicating the Cubans were about to pull it from the water. He glanced over his shoulder at Mickey and indicated for him to go to starboard. Mickey gave a thumbs-up, then broke slightly to the right. Dawson was only feet away now and he stopped kicking, putting his arms out to create drag and came to a halt with a gentle tap on the hull, immediately setting to work.
Somebody shouted overhead.
