Chapter 3

"What are you doing here?" Tomi was incredulous.

"What am I doing here?" Dusty looked embarrassed. He cut a glance to the guy beside him who looked very inebriated.

"Can I talk to you a moment?" Tomi asked.

"When?" Dusty looked desperate.

"Now."

"Ah..."

"Please. It will only take a minute."

Dusty looked frustrated as he scratched his head. "Now isn't really a good time."

Tomi thought it was a damned good time. His whole body had gone cold. His mother's leering face popped into his mind. He knew his mother blamed Ren for the accident, but Tomi was determined to prove there were no demons. That it was human evil, pure human action, and perhaps the lack of divine intervention that had caused the accident.

Steve had received a disturbing phone call, telling him confidentially that there was a guy in this very bar boasting about having caused an accident in his boyfriend's vintage Crimson Cat. The guy had laughed about how easy it had been to pay some loser mechanic in the hood to patch up his car.

In the middle of the night, no less.

After discussing things with Steve, Ren and Steve had agreed that Tomi should come here to see if the stoned, drunk guy was the one he'd met with Dusty.

He sure was, though he was in no mood for conversation. He was obviously plastered.

"You fuckin' him, too?" the drunk was asking Dusty, who looked petrified of this weasel. Tomi couldn't understand it. How could a guy like Dusty let such an obvious creep talk to him this way?

"Shut up, Simon," Dusty snapped.

The drunk, whose name apparently was Simon, looked wide-eyed now. "Oh, you'll pay for that."

"Yeah. I'm sure I will." A shroud of bleakness seemed to sweep over Dusty. "C'mon," he said to Tomi and they went outside.

"Fuckin' him on the sidewalk?" Simon shouted after them. "There's an ordinance against that!"

Tomi shuddered at the sound of Simon's crazy laughter.

Outside, he kept staring inside the darkened window of the club. In spite of the tinting, he could see Simon watching them, grinding himself against the glass. Oh, God. Now he was licking it.

"What do you want?" Dusty asked, sounding terse.

"I just wanted to ask you something."

"Go on."

"Where did the accident happen?"

"Excuse me?" Dusty managed to look nervous, frightened and pissed, all at the same time.

"You heard me. Where did you hit me?"

Dusty opened and closed his mouth.

"Yeah. Just as I thought. You don't have a clue. You weren't even there. Why did you take responsibility for it?"

Dusty appeared to be on the verge of saying something, then seemed to change his mind. He merely shook his head.

"Please," Tomi said. "I want to understand."

"Oh, fuck." Dusty put his hands on his hips and stared at the ground.

"Please," Tomi repeated.

"Why do you care?" Dusty almost sounded desperate. "I assumed responsibility. I said I'd pay your medical bills."

Tomi felt wretched now. He had no idea what the hell was going on but he sure as hell didn't like this guy accepting responsibility for something he didn't do. He tried to keep his tone gentle when he spoke again.
