By the time we made it to the hotel, the rain was tapering off, and a beautiful double rainbow was just visible over the hills. I stopped on the sidewalk and admired it for a second before following Zane inside. The lobby of the hotel was busier than normal, and I spotted Kelsie running back and forth, looking harried. I gave her a little wave as Zane and I stepped into the elevator. The doors slid shut, and the noise faded as we headed to the fourth floor.
âGeez, that was crazy,â Zane said. âI wonder whatâs going on?â
âIâm not sure, but poor Kelsie looked like she was at her witâs end, there.â
The door creaked open, and we stepped into the hall. The rhythmic sound of sanding led us down the corridor towards the room at the end of the hall. I peeked in and saw one of Loganâs workers, Tim, working on smoothing the seam on the sheetrock.
âHey, Tim. Howâs it going?â I asked.
He stopped and wiped the dust from his face. Sanding sheetrock was one of my least favorite jobs, and I was thrilled Loganâs crew had come back to work once Iâd helped the banshee pass on. Iâd been helping him with the demo of the rooms, but this was a task I preferred to avoid.
âHe should be down at the other end, crossing off his checklist. Hopefully, weâre all good.â
I let him get back to work and joined Zane in the hall. He had his phone up to his ear, so I pointed out where I was going. He followed behind me, preoccupied with whoever he was talking to. I noticed a door propped open and stuck my head inside, spotting Logan with his clipboard, wearing a deep frown.
âHey, why so serious?â I asked as I walked into the room.
âFreckles. Long time, no see. Iâm just focused on making sure weâve gotten everything done,â Logan said before giving me a quick hug. âWhereâs your hunk of burning love?â
I made a face and stepped back, looking around the room.
âLetâs not make that nickname a thing, okay? Heâs out in the hall on the phone. This looks amazing.â
I checked out the changes heâd made in the room and nodded my approval. Everything was shaping up and, like heâd said, Iâd be ready to get the painters going with the colors Iâd chosen for the new suites. Since the hotel was built in the early 1900s, I was going with a color scheme from that time period and I couldnât wait to see how it was all going to turn out.
âThanks. It feels good to be getting closer to finishing up our end of the work. Weâve got about six jobs lined up after this, so Iâd like to get it done as fast as we can. What time is it?â
I slid my phone out of my pocket and glanced at the screen.
âRight before lunch.â
âSweet, Iâm starving. Do you and Lover Boy want to eat with me?â
âEw, thatâs an even worse nickname, and thatâs saying something.
