By the time we made it to the hotel, the rain was tapering off, and a beautiful double rainbow was just visible over the hills. I stopped on the sidewalk and admired it for a second before following Zane inside. The lobby of the hotel was busier than normal, and I spotted Kelsie running back and forth, looking harried. I gave her a little wave as Zane and I stepped into the elevator. The doors slid shut, and the noise faded as we headed to the fourth floor.

“Geez, that was crazy,” Zane said. “I wonder what’s going on?”

“I’m not sure, but poor Kelsie looked like she was at her wit’s end, there.”

The door creaked open, and we stepped into the hall. The rhythmic sound of sanding led us down the corridor towards the room at the end of the hall. I peeked in and saw one of Logan’s workers, Tim, working on smoothing the seam on the sheetrock.

“Hey, Tim. How’s it going?” I asked.

He stopped and wiped the dust from his face. Sanding sheetrock was one of my least favorite jobs, and I was thrilled Logan’s crew had come back to work once I’d helped the banshee pass on. I’d been helping him with the demo of the rooms, but this was a task I preferred to avoid.

“He should be down at the other end, crossing off his checklist. Hopefully, we’re all good.”

I let him get back to work and joined Zane in the hall. He had his phone up to his ear, so I pointed out where I was going. He followed behind me, preoccupied with whoever he was talking to. I noticed a door propped open and stuck my head inside, spotting Logan with his clipboard, wearing a deep frown.

“Hey, why so serious?” I asked as I walked into the room.

“Freckles. Long time, no see. I’m just focused on making sure we’ve gotten everything done,” Logan said before giving me a quick hug. “Where’s your hunk of burning love?”

I made a face and stepped back, looking around the room.

“Let’s not make that nickname a thing, okay? He’s out in the hall on the phone. This looks amazing.”

I checked out the changes he’d made in the room and nodded my approval. Everything was shaping up and, like he’d said, I’d be ready to get the painters going with the colors I’d chosen for the new suites. Since the hotel was built in the early 1900s, I was going with a color scheme from that time period and I couldn’t wait to see how it was all going to turn out.

“Thanks. It feels good to be getting closer to finishing up our end of the work. We’ve got about six jobs lined up after this, so I’d like to get it done as fast as we can. What time is it?”

I slid my phone out of my pocket and glanced at the screen.

“Right before lunch.”

“Sweet, I’m starving. Do you and Lover Boy want to eat with me?”

“Ew, that’s an even worse nickname, and that’s saying something.
