“That sounds horrible. What husband would send his wife away during the holidays? Son or no son.”

“My husband.” She gave a small laugh and patted his arm. “It doesn’t help that within our circle, London’s tonne refers to me as the barren baroness.”

Michael wasn’t sure what to say to that revelation. He knew how barren women were treated in all parts of society. Even the poor weren’t spared the shame of being unable to produce children. Her revelation did tell him that she was honest in her statement of speaking her mind without thoughts to the rules of society. After all, women didn’t speak openly about being barren, especially within mixed company. Yet this proper lady just blurted it out.

“Let’s head back now, it is awfully cold out here.”

Michael nodded and led her and Ester back to the house. Ester stayed a distance behind them the whole way, affording them any privacy they needed. His respect for his sister-in-law rose a notch. He wondered if the baroness knew the truth about Ester. It wasn’t any of his business but he wondered if the proper lady would still be friends with Ester if she knew. Ester was such a kind soul and he hoped for her sake that the baroness would still be her friend.

Once inside, he bid them a good day and went in search of John. He figured maybe with what little information he had that John could dig up some dirt on Paddy in connection to the baron. He knew that it was a long shot but so worth it if something did turn up. He found John in his study, where he went about telling his brother what he knew and what he hoped to accomplish.
