After Zeke dropped that bombshell, he locked himself in his study and refused to let me in. Or anyone. I even broke down and called my grandmother Lila, explaining what happened. She came over, and he wouldn’t open the door for her either. After that, she grilled me for over an hour on all I know about Cass Willow.

Dinner came and went, Mrs. Banks serving our guests in the dining room while the rest of us nibbled on something in the kitchen. Ethan and Eric are upstairs playing video games, and Mary’s somewhere. I told her I needed time alone to think. She respected that.

Cass is my brother.

I’m not sure how to feel about that. I’m actually grossed out because I thought he was cute, and if I hadn’t had Dan, I might have liked him. Thank God for small miracles.

I think about texting Dan, but this is news that needs to be delivered in person. He’s always been a little jealous of Cass, especially because I’m forever putting myself squarely in danger to help him. He knows I wouldn’t do that for just anyone. The first time I met Cass, I trusted him instinctively, but I thought it was because he reminded me of Eli. Not that Cass looks like Eli, but his mannerisms and wicked sense of humor and that charm…that’s what made me think of Eli.

But that wasn’t it at all. It was my mind trying to make sense of something I knew deep down. I recognized Cass because of Zeke. He has my father’s blue eyes. The rest of the Willows have brown eyes, but not Cass. His are blue. He must get his blond hair from his mother.

He’s my brother.

Cass is not going to be happy about this. He was raised to hate everything about the Cranes, thanks to his uncle. He’s not like me and Zeke. He has morals. Not that I don’t, I just don’t mind breaking mine when necessary to protect the people I love. I’m not sure Cass would.

How am I going to tell him?

He accepts me because I wasn’t raised to be a Crane. I grew up in foster care. If I’d grown up under my father’s roof, Cass and I might even be enemies right now.

There’s a knock on my door, and then it opens, revealing Nathaniel. He leans against the doorframe. “You okay?”

I shake my head.

“I saw your grandmother downstairs. She’s as scary as my own grandmother, and that’s saying something.” He pushes off the door and comes to sit beside me. “She and Mary were talking, and I decided to come check on you.”

“Lila loves Mary as much as she does me. Sometimes I think she wishes Mary was her granddaughter instead of me.”

“What do you mean?”

“Mary is great with makeup and fashion and parties. She doesn’t do or say things that embarrasses Lila in front of her friends. Lila actually winces when I talk sometimes.”

“She loves you.”

“I know, but that doesn’t mean I don’t embarrass her.”

“I’m still thinking it was easier with Lila than it was with me.
