Academics

The academic career path is an extensive one that could lead to job opportunities in fields other than higher education. When considering such an option at the undergraduate level, you should take as wide a range of classes as possible to expose you to the entire field of political science. This will allow you to make an informed decision at the graduate level of which subfield you would like to pursue the most. Often, the subfield you are most attracted to will change depending on your exposure to it. Ensuring that you have the best information on which to base a future choice should be paramount at the undergraduate level.

Since pursuing a graduate degree in political science will come with an expectation of independent research, it will be helpful to participate in the types of research experiences that you would consider if you wanted to work in a think tank. This includes becoming a research assistant or working on your own research project under the advisement of a faculty member.
